Sep 18, 2016 – Recording in Lethbridge
I had written a couple of new songs .. our plan was to record them if we possibly could… At the last minute, Neil set something up at a studio in Lethbridge ..very close to the venue where we would play.
It worked out perfect. A highly regarded singer/songwriter, Leeroy Stagger, who owns the recording studio, and his cohort Ryland were waiting for us when we arrived.
We had only a few hours before soundcheck .. but because Leeroy and Ryland were so ready, that’s all we needed .. I think the tracks came out very good… Mike Lent played bass.. I played guitar .. Carrie played fiddle and we both sang together.. live.. not overdubbed.. I’ll keep you up-to-date as soon as I get a chance to listen to the tracks back in New York and make some decisions.
(note: I am back in New York now and I have listen to the track ..”Who’s Going to Build That Wall”.. and it sounds pretty great!.. so you might be hearing it soon!)
Show at the Geomatic Attic
This is one of my favorite shows and venues .. a sold-out smaller venue then we’ve been playing… The spirit was unbelievably great.. lots of C&C fans here .. Carrie had played here twice on solo tours.. she told me to expect something special .. she was certainly right about that
Hosted by a great great guy named Mike…who owns a successful geometric… Whatever that means… surveyor business … The venue is located in a small industrial complex.. upstairs from his business office. Somehow Mike has made the space warm and vibey.
Our host is a total music junkie who books cutting edge artists as his “give back” to the community.. this is a non-profit event. Mike is an excellent cook as well.. we had a delicious stew and salad .. huge thanks!
Before dinner we did a quick sound check with our excellent sound engineer, Dino.. thanks Dino.. sound was great all night!
The wonderful Shaye Zadravek opened the show again tonight with a well-paced 5 song set. .the audience loved her! .. Carrie and I do as well.. great job Shaye!
What a way to end this amazing tour.. We loved this!
Immediately there was a connection with this great audience.. It was like we were playing for a bunch of friends.. many of them fans.. I noticed several singing along.
Carrie, Mike and I were so loose and comfortable on stage.. the solos by Carrie and Mike were so off the charts .. and the C&C harmonies felt other-worldly to me at times .. like on Lets Leave This Town .. and Big Moon Shining.. and Angel Of the Morning.. so special tonight.
And Must Be the Whiskey and Don’t Speak In English sounded so inspired as did Dirty Little Texas Story and Your Name Is on My Lips Again .. come to think of it .. There wasn’t one song that didn’t sound somewhat special to me.
That’s what a great audience combined with a great venue vibe can do.
We were so “in it together” on Wild Thing.. Great audience thing going on there!.. We encored with We Come Up Shining.. and after another standing ovation… we closed with a spirited Laredo .. loved this! awesome solos by Mike & Carrie!
This was special!

Sept 17, 2016 – Calgary Canada – Saturday Night Special
We arrived at about 2 o’clock and met some of the folks in charge. Chuck was the host-great guy and bass player in the excellent country band that will precede us .. Mike was our soundman for the night and did a great job and Calin handled all of the things on the stage… This is a very professional bunch of folks and made Carrie and Mike Lent’s job very easy this afternoon and then at the show tonight.
After a good check we went back to the hotel to relax a little bit and returned for show time… Which would be quite a bit later than normal due to the fact that their very good country band would play a great opening set… We hit the stage at about 9 o’clock.
One of our volunteer hosts .. a nice guy named Ed, introduced us in quite an extensive matter… Thanks Ed.
We opened with Keep Your Hat on Jenny … Then one of the chilling moments of the night came… At least for me .. a chilling and warm version of Let’s leave This Town.
All the Rain really rocked and Your Name is on My Lips Again seemed to touch everybody… as it has in everyone of our shows… and Do Your Part was fun again as it has been on this whole tour.. Mike and Carrie solos on this are always one of the high points of our show.
After a mysterious Red Dog Tracks and Elzick’s Farewell, we ended the first set with the special and very warm version of Angel of the Morning.. Carrie is simply amazing!
The sets seem to breeze bye.. Carrie opened with her beautiful ballad from Lola… Then we continued with our biggest hit Sweet Tequila Blues… Memphis TX was chilling tonight.. folks seem to love it .. certainly one of the highlights as was Don’t Speak in English
But again tonight… One of the major highlights was a cool and sweaty version of Wild Thing .. this might’ve been the best Wild Thing the last many years.. It was totally an audience / artist “in this thing together”. So cool and warm and sensual and sweaty… with lots of audience chanting .. they were a huge part of the experience… …. Loved this.
We ended with the warm We Come Up Shining which, again, had the audience standing and cheering.
Due to the late finish of the show, many had to head home .. waving goodbye as they left… Got a chance to say hello to a few including:
Hi Eric and Catherine nice talking with you thanks for the kind words you as well Elizabeth and Linda so nice to see you at the end of the show Ed very nice job… thanks!! Hi Chris (Christine) Happy Birthday! nice talking to you about your four children sounds like they’re all doing great and your relationship with them sounds wonderful.
Again big thanks to our friend Chuck, loved looking at your book with you for a little while before the show that was special… And Mike very nice to see you and Calin … Great job prescient all your efforts… It was so nice to see Phil in the audience Neil’s old friend and brilliant guitar player and then later on say a quick hi to Phil’s son Jake.. Also great talking to you Guy, the wonderful keyboard player from the country band.
Big hello and thanks to Cathy and Lisa and all the ladies to help take care of us tonight all the folks the volunteer their time… What a nice thing to do.
Carrie and I appreciate all your efforts and look forward to seeing you another time
Sep 16, 2016 – Calgary – Fish Creek Concerts / River Park Church
Shaye Zadravek / opening set
This one-of-a-kind singer/artist from Calgary opened our show with a wonderful five song set.. Shaye is being introduced to the world by using guru Neil McGonigle, who introduced so many other folks… including me… to this part of the world.
The Chip and Carrie show
We did one long set tonight… It felt so good to play for these wonderful old friends… And some new ones…I had great feelings about the entire show tonight… I’ll call attention to a couple… I remember feeling such chills when we did Big Moon Shining… And Must be the Whiskey… And Don’t Speak in English… And Oh yes … Memphis,Texas… this one felt so warm and beautiful on stage in the audience seemed to love it.
It was such a strong interaction with this audience and Carrie .. taking us to places we had not gone so far .. the long and short of it was this ended up being an extremely inspired show.
And then came Wild Thing at the end… Now normally we just do that and it’s fun and all of that… But tonight… There was some magic thing in the air and this intimate warm sensual and subtle version… had an unusual but amazing interactive feeling… I can’t remember enjoying this song more… It was like Big Moon Shining vibe… .. only it was Wild Thing… and the audience was chanting the chorus with us for pretty much the whole last half of the song.. The chant, at first so soft and subtle, became a bit louder ..than just a bit louder .. never over-the-top but just so cool and warm and special… and mixed with cool solos for Mike and Carrie… it was sort of otherworldly . I’ll remember this one for a long time.
The audience stood and cheered for quite a while and we decided to stay on the stage and do one more.
So we closed with We Come Up Shining… and it was so chilling and in the end the audience was again standing and cheering and we were all feeling good together.
This was a very very special night… Thanks to this great audience and all the people at the club who make it so easy for us to do what we do.. much appreciated!
Big thanks for putting this together, Vic .. that was something special.. thanks Keith for the good sound and Greg for all your efforts.
Thanks Tony good to see you at the end. Hi Gail… Nice seeing you… Thanks to all the folks we share dinner with , who donate their time .. Carrie and I appreciate all your efforts!
Hi Richard thanks for the kind words about listening to the radio interview… Glad you got the chills… Hi Helen… And Brenda and friend Marilyn.
Hi Kirby… And Dana… Great to see you guys… Kirby can’t wait to hear you saying that I can you’re special!
And Donna… With memories from the Calgary for club in 2006.. Big hello to Steve and Susan and Marianne… Hope the pictures turned out good… Hi Brad and Greg and Aaron… And Laurie and Tim and Carianne and Val and Doug hi Gordon… Good to see you.
Great to see you Rudy… Big love to Suzanne .. I hope she’s feeling better.. Loved talking golf with you.. Go Brooke!….. And Britney!
Hi Gail… And Kathy… Nice seeing you as we left… This was a special night… Thanks for all the support… And the memories…
To all who attended tonight thanks for your support… Carrie and I hope to see you all soon.
Sep 15, 2016 – Red Deer Canada – Elk’s Lodge
We got a late checkout at our hotel in Edmonton and headed to our next venue in Red Deer … this is a working man’s town halfway between Edmonton and Calgary .. In 1875 it developed as a trading post along what was then known as the Calgary and Edmonton Trail .. We are going to sound check there and play the show and then head out to stay in Calgary.
Part of the magic of playing at this venue is the dinner that awaits us there… Cooked by our now friend Shannon. Just an unbelievable cook who prepares stuff with just the right flavorings . Tonight it’s delicious pork chops .. two different kinds of them .. with fresh vegetables an amazing salad and terrific potatoes and desserts.
Huge thanks again Shannon… I can’t believe you made the 12 hour trip to do this for us.
What a wonderful bunch of folks to play for tonight. We had such a connection together it was an amazingly fun and warm and inspired show.. There was a lot of long applause and cheering after most every song… So it kept Carrie and me reaching for higher levels… It’s a good thing.
So many special ones… Let’s Leave This Town , Your name is on my lips again… Don’t speak in English… Sweet tequila blues….Dirty Little Texas story… Memphis Texas… Wild thing… Big Moon Shining… Laredo… Angel of the Morning… What a wonderful spirit floated through this room tonight with all these songs… it doesn’t get better than this.
Mike Lent was absolutely amazing again tonight… again… And then I want to say this over and over….For Carrie and I, Michael is a magic man for our songs .. Tonight my Texas friend and I were in another world sort of… It was so inspiring and so chilling.. And Carrie’s solos were off the charts and combined with Mike’s solos and accents it made it sort of like a jazz thing .. and combined with all this heartfelt country/folk stuff.. It was extraordinarily unique sounding… at least to my ears .. Definitely a night to remember for those of us on stage.
Thanks to all who shared this adventure!
Doug thanks for the great sound and Shannon thanks for the great food… And Mike thanks for booking the show and Cheryl wonderful to see you later at the end of it.

Sep 14, 2016 – Edmonton, Canada – Festival Place
Carrie & I hadn’t played in this community since 2006. What an amazing group of folks to play for and what an amazing welcome we got when we hit the stage. I won’t forget that feeling!
For all our shows in Alberta, our old friend and revered bass player from this neck of the woods, Mike Lent, will be joining us. It is so great to see Mike again after all these .. he brings such warm magic to the C&C songs! It doesn’t get better than this.
After the show it was so great to see Mike’s wonderful wife Bev and the kids Joey and Ben and friend Kathrine … So wonderful to see you all again.
We started with Keep Your Hat On Jenny and just fired away from there – Highlights were far too many to mention all. Almost this whole set was a highlight for me, but let’s start with this… Let’s Leave This Town was so chilling. Our number one single from a “best of” album four years ago, Your Name is On My Lips Again, felt so warm and inspired… folks in Texas seemed to love this song.. and it was no different here.
Then, Do Your Part was an audience favorite and so much fun .. and the solos by Mike and Carrie were amazing! Tonight’s Red Dog Tacks was as soulful a version of this song is I can remember.
Carrie did a brilliant fiddle solo of Elzick’s Farewell to a huge response … just before we ended the set with Angel of the Morning. We could hear the audience cheering long after we left the stage.
Carrie started the set with the song from her wonderful album, Lola… to a very very warm reception. Then came our first hit, Sweet Tequila Blues, that had the audience clapping their hands in time .. a huge response to this and our next one, Must Be The Whiskey .. with it’s references to Turner Valley and the “light show in Edmonton”, referring to the lightning storm that happened at the Edmonton folk festival in 2004. Don’t Speak in English was another audience favorite tonight.
One of the special moments for Carrie and me, was a requested Oh Set A Light, which had very special meaning to a nice woman named Sue … So glad we could play that in the spirit of your mom, Rose . much love Sue.
Somewhere toward the end of the night we played Big Moon Shining … always a highlight for us .. no different tonight.
To wrap things up. we had some fun with Wild Thing with some great solos by Mike and Carrie .. and like most nights in the past when Carrie and I would play, a highlight for us was We Come Up Shining. I had chills throughout my body from start to finish with this one tonight. We double encored with Laredo, put our instruments away and came back to say hello to the nicest folks.
Gwen and Lloyd and Glenys.. And John and Susan with memories of her little Dustin from years ago.. Hi to Wayne and Barb and Len and Rio
Hi Kelly and Audrey… Hope to see Deanna next time around.. send her our best regards… so great to see old friends Dan and Ivy and Isaac see sitting front row center.. Just wonderful to see you all… Thanks so much for waiting in line to say hello.
Mike… It was so great to see you and talk to you and remember the stories … Dublin Blues and Guy’s live album and all the other wonderful stuff you’ve done ..very good to see you and Janet tonight hope to see you again.. Hi Peter … So great to see you again … I’ll give you another golf lesson next time .. Thanks so much for your support over the years.
Hi Kevin thanks for bringing your friend Guy .. Hope Jessica and Cozanne enjoy the sentiment and the songs.. Hi Crispen and Gary.. And Colleen and Susan… So good to see you after the show much love to the spirit of Rose.. Hi Heather and Valda and Bill so good to see you guys. Hi Beth… Great to see you… And thanks for the invitation to have a house concert and very happy birthday David hello Becky and Gary.

Big thanks to the staff folks Allene and Cindy and all the others ..such kind folks .. And Alan thanks so much for. your efforts in having us here… And Gavin so great to be here and huge thanks for having us.
Huge thanks to my great friend and musical guru from these parts, Neil MacGonigill,. who is totally the reason for me ever setting foot in this province.
And thanks to our friend Gordo who is assisting Neil at every turn and selling his CDs for us and driving us to and from places… Thanks for going the extra mile Gordo!
What an amazing night!
Carrie and I will not forget this show! Thanks to all who attended.
Aug 30, 2016 – Songwriting School of Los Angeles – Live audio video blog… Hosted by Paul Zollo
Everything about this surprised me… In an extremely good way!
This was a very well-prepared retrospective about my songwriting/recording work since my teenage years through, and including, current stuff.
Paul works hand in hand with an extremely efficient soundman/producer, Rob, who was totally prepared to introduce actual recording samples from my past… Including a verse and a chorus of a couple of songs from my original work with King records in the 50s.. various versions of Angel of the Morning… The Troggs version and Jimi Hendrix version of Wild Thing… And the great Linda Ronstadt recording of I Can’t Let Go.
These recordings were played at various intervals of Paul’s terrific interview.. Which included me punctuating certain stories with actual songs played simply with guitar. The actual recordings took me totally took me by surprise.. in the best possible way. And the warm interview and recorded blasts got me thinking about, and talking about, things I hadn’t thought about in a long while.
This was a great audience to play for – totally involved in music and into the history of music. They either knew or wanted to know all the things about the recording sessions.. the musicians .. the studios the manner in which the recordings were made… Thoughts about the songs as they were written… The manner in which I write songs etc. All this was guided by a very informed Paul Zollo… well done Paul… Big thanks!
There were a few absolute music gurus in this audience, Including one fella named Sam, who seemed to be a walking talking history book of music from the 50s and 60s… and beyond…
As I mentioned the interview continued to current things and we closed the show with the song from my new album. The album is Little Brothers and the song is called “Refugee Children” (something I wrote from actual experience). It was so great to hear the audience sing the chorus loud and clear before we said good-bye!
Big thanks to all
Hi Sam… Looking forward to going back-and-forth with you soon. Donna.. Great seeing you front and center Donna.. Hi Flávia nice talking to you after the show.. Hi Neil… Good to see you before and after the show… Deborah nice talking with you downstairs.. Nice talking with you as well Duane… Thanks for the memories about Last Chance… Hope you get a chance to get the new Warner Bros. retrospective from the 70s… Which will include Last Chance, This Side of the Big River, and Some of Us… Plus a “Live from Armadillo World Headquarters” from 1973 which will be released in December.
Again… Huge thanks Paul… enjoyed talking with you… And Rob… Thanks so much for loaning me that great guitar .. and thanks for your wonderful work with the sound and the recordings
PS .. So good to be here with my wife Joan… She was so much a part of the story.. She loved this show! She sends her big thanks to all is well!
